Coming Soon: Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers Damn The Torpedoes Deluxe Edition 180 Gram Vinyl

On November 9, 2010, The Original Recordings Group (ORG) will release a deluxe edition of Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers' landmark 1979 record, Damn The Torpedoes. This two-record set will include the original album on disc one, as well as a second disc of nine tracks, consisting of bonus tracks, alternate takes, b-sides and live versions--seven of which are previously unreleased.

Chris Bellman, of Bernie Grundman Mastering, was responsible for mastering this reissue--and he transferred the original analog master tapes directly to vinyl for the entirety of disc one, as well as the two bonus album tracks found on disc two. The remainder of the bonus material was mastered by Bellman from 24/96 digital sources mixed by engineer, Ryan Ulyate. Bellman used the same mastering chain he used for this year's excellent sounding Mojo vinyl, and the vinyl itself was pressed at the Pallas facility in Germany.

Because Sound Matters is offering a very limited quantity of  individually numbered sets, pressed on red vinyl. In addition to the limited red vinyl pressing, there will be also be a black vinyl pressing, also on 180 gram vinyl and containing the identical mastering. Included with all sets will be a coupon for a free hi-res digital download containing the entire album and all bonus material.

In addition to the vinyl release, this deluxe reissue is also being released on regular cd and  Blu-Ray disc. Given that all of the formats have the bonus tracks, the real question will be whether the remastered vinyl will sound better than the original Sterling-mastered version. Bellman has definitely acquainted himself with Petty's sound, and has previously turned out excellent efforts on both the Mudcrutch and  Mojo vinyl releases.
